This book is written in four parts.

Part 1 is a story about the experiences of an emergency room doctor on one of his shifts. Its purpose is to give the reader an insight into how people suffering from stress - related illnesses present to a doctor or, in this case, to an emergency room doctor. It is hoped that the reader will gain a better understanding of stress from a clinical perspective, specifically the signs, symptoms and causes of the various stress - related disorders. In this way greater insight will be gained about stress and thus hopefully aid the reader in managing his or her stress better.

Part 2 describes stress from a pathophysiological perspective. The reader is taken on a journey through the brain and body to see what transpires here when a person experiences stress. The chemical and neurological processes which take place during the stress response are vividly described. Hopefully the reader will, after reading through this section, be even more informed about stress and have an even greater insight into what this destructive process is all about.

Having become familiar with the various ways in which stress-filled patients present to a doctor and what processes occur in their brains and bodies, the reader will no doubt be curious to learn more about the various disorders or illnesses that stress wreaks upon people. Part 3 provides this information.

Finally, Part 4, which is the crux of this book, describes the various techniques that the reader can use, and practices that he or she can engage in, to manage and control his or her stress. Ten techniques and practices are discussed and the reader is encouraged to apply all of them. Some of them should be used on a regular basis while others can be used ‘on-demand” i.e. at the very moment that stress is being experienced.

Also please note that it is not essential to read through Parts 1, 2 and 3 to enjoy the benefits this book has to offer. However, as indicated, doing so will provide the reader with greater knowledge and insight into this harmful phenomenon we call “Stress”.
